Underlying Philosophy
We only have one body, we know that already. This body is designed to move, and it adapts to the lifestyle factors to which we expose it. A lot of time now days is spent hunched over a computer or a phone, or sedentary at work, driving around, or watching TV. This can lengthen and weaken our posterior chain muscles, while also shorten and strengthen our anterior chain muscles. Not to mention de-loading and switching the core muscles off, destabilising the spine. This sets us up for a lot of complications down the road and increases the risk of injury during movements that we do perform.
This is why The Functional Fitness Guy follows the performance period approach. We address any health, pain or dysfunction issues first and foremost. From here:
- Building good mobility and flexibility is essential for optimal ranges of motion,
- Focusing on core strength and stability ensures a safe position for our spine throughout movement,
- Developing endurance in these muscles develops a higher baseline for functioning of these muscles,
- Overall strength increases the upper limit or threshold for the muscles,
- Increase the speed of the maximum contraction of these muscles develops speed and power, then lastly;
- Optimising all of these attributes to a sport or performance focus.
Not everyone wants to play sport at a high level, but we should try to optimise our movement and lifestyle practices to what we want to achieve. Following this philosophy, The Functional Fitness Guy can guide you in developing this getting your body ready for whatever it may be that you want to achieve.
Risk Assessments
The initial stage of our work together. A risk assessment is critical to determine your baseline movement capacities, assessing if you are at risk of injury, and if there are any imbalances in movement range, quality, or capacity.
The Functional Fitness Guy uses the Move2Perform software to determine these values. It allows us to provide a comparison to normal values for your age and profession, whether you're the average person going for the occasional run, the amateur athlete trying to move to the next level, or the professional athlete trying to optimise their performance. It combines a series of tests, including Functional Movement Screening (FMS), Y-Balance testing, and hop testing to determine your results. From here, you get a document that highlights your results and areas for improvement.
This gives us the baseline for your programming and training sessions for the future!
1-on-1/2-on-1 Coaching
The premium service. The Functional Fitness Guy doesn't just gear itself towards training you. We take a coaching approach, educating you on the desired movement patterns and why they're important to your goals. Whether that is priming you for your next sporting event, or you just want to move pain free.
With 2-on-1 coaching, you split the session cost 50:50 while still getting the benefit of a coach. You also get that added fun and motivation of working out with a friend! Whether you want to train solo or with a friend, The Functional Fitness Guy has an option for you.
Nutrition/Holistic Lifestyle Coaching
Maybe you're already training hard, but you're just not getting the results you'd expect. This is where nutrition and lifestyle coaching comes in to play. The approach we follow is based on learnings from the world-renowned CHEK Institute's Holistic Lifestyle Coaching Level 2 course. After completing a series of questionnaires about your lifestyle and nutrition habits, we have an initial consult to discuss your goals and objectives around your current training and lifestyle. In the back end, The Functional Fitness guy puts together a healthy lifestyle plan, based on the initial consult and the questionnaires, which provides guidance to how we can optimise your current practices to better meet your goals. Then we have another consult to discuss the findings, the healthy lifestyle plan, and cover any questions about the path ahead.
Online Programming
The Functional Fitness Guy is based out of Good Life Success, but that may not be an ideal location for you. Or you might be intrinsically motivated but just need the right programming to help you meet your goals. Either way, an online programme may be the better option for you. After an initial consult to determine your goals (in person or via video chat) for your health and fitness, we put a 4 week programme together for you through the state of the art training software PT Enhance, and spend another consult running through the programme to cover any technique issues or questions that you may have.
